Hannah Cotten is a 5th grade science teacher at Hill Elementary in Austin, Texas
who recently received a teacher travel research grant through JASON Learning.
Hannah traveled to the AMAZON RAINFOREST from July 25th to August 3rd.
A group brought together through CoSN made her participation in the expedition possible.
Dr. Meg Lowman, a renowned ecologist, canopy biologist and rainforest conservationist,
led the scientific study on this expedition. While in the Amazon rainforest,
Hannah studied the biodiversity of plant and animal life using canopy walkways to collect leaf samples. Hannah, along with the team,
surveyed the leaves, studying herbivory, or the eating of leaves. Additionally, she interacted with local tribes,
working on village improvements such as planting seeds and painting houses. Night hikes, bird watching,
piranha fishing, and boat rides along the Amazon were all adventurous and illuminating aspects of this expedition.
In addition, Hannah and the team learned about medicinal plants and herbal healing from a Shaman,
visited Dr. Linnea Smith's local medical clinic, interacted with
endangered monkeys and witnessed bio-luminescent fungi in the rainforest.
